Eric Smith

Computer Science graduate who worked across Neuromuscular Signal Analysis, Virtual Reailty, and Backend Software Engineering.

I spend most of my time adding containers to my Synology NAS and researching new technology. Recently out of UBC, currently deep in a homelab and a stack of certifications.

    Student Participant & Research Assistant

UBC Research — Virtual Reality Co-Design

    • Built VR applications inside an agile development workflow
    • Brought VR technology into older-adult communities and supported its use in practice
    • Presented academic research to technical and non-technical audiences alike
    • Ran technical data collection across a broad participant base
  3. Apr 2023 — Dec 2023

    Brewing Assistant

    Motherlove Ferments — Kelowna, BC

    • Led brewing practices for kombucha, including vessel and keg cleaning cycles and flavor concentrate production

    • Operated forklifts and industrial washing equipment
    • Trained and worked safely with hazardous chemicals in extreme conditions

Projects

Homelab

Self-hosted domain and personal email, with a Synology system running Docker containers. Devices — desktop, laptop, phone, and NAS — synced over a private Tailscale mesh network.

DockerNetworkingAI

Image Aesthetics Survey

UBC Capstone Project

Founded and built a survey site comparing mathematically generated images against a curated set to study aesthetic preference. Analyzed which traits correlated with perceived beauty across different populations.

PythonJavaScriptSQLDockerAI

TypeSelect

A keyboard-driven alternative to trackpad navigation, mapping shortcuts to everyday desktop actions. Ran a statistical study with real participants to measure the time savings.
